This case study is based on public domain documents concerning several biopharmaceutical and insurance sector companies, notably Bioxel Pharma Inc., Merck (Medco Health), Bristol-Myers Squibb, Advance PCS, Biovail Corporation, ESI-Canada and BCE Emergis. The sectors’ most common commercial practices and activities were chosen and brought together in one firm, Mythco Pharma Inc. (fictitious name), so as to shed light on problems pertaining to accounting choices and the quality of published financial information.
With this case, students are invited to critically analyse the quality of the firm’s principles, as well as its accounting practices. The case’s main subjects cover:
