Description

A Decision-Making or a Decision-Imposing Process?: Abstract

Pelle, a company specialized in manufacturing leather clothing, mainly uses lamb leather to produce its different items. Due to the rising cost of lamb leather, however, Pelle recently decided to examine other alternatives. The president delegated the task of making this decision to the managers of the company’s units. In a meeting, the production manager unilaterally decided to switch from lamb lather to pig leather, which is much cheaper, without discussing any other alternatives. The finance manager backed his decision. However, the human resource manager and the marketing manager could not believe how fast their colleague had made his decision. The marketing manager argued that changing to pig skin would create a problem for sales personnel, as it is easier to sell clothes made from lamb leather than from pig leather. The human resource manager raised issues related to training employees in order to familiarize them with the new raw material and the effect of such a decision on the sales personnel’s motivation to sell.
