John R. Porter and The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec: Abstract
John R. Porter and The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is a case study by Michèle Charbonneau and Laurent Lapierre.
Exhibitions mounted by the Musée du Québec in recent years have included Rodin in Québec, Félicien Rops, James Tissot, Masterworks: Italian Design, Jean-Paul Riopelle’s L’Hommage à Rosa Luxembourg and Alfred Pellan’s Le Bestiaire. The 1998 staging of Rodin in Québec won the Musée wide acclaim and drew over 500,000 visitors – striking in a city whose population hovers around that mark. At the same time, in order to fulfill its mission as custodian of Quebec art, the Musée was faced with the challenge of developing strategies to consolidate its financial position.
