The Palau de la Música Catalana: A Century of Fame: Abstract
The Palau de la Música Catalana, located in Barcelona, is an internationally renowned concert hall and a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. This hundred-year-old institution also houses one of Catalonia’s most beloved artistic institutions, namely the Orfeó Català (Catalan Choir). The Palau is unique in its genre. It is the only existing Modernist building in the world. The Palau has always thrived between two poles – planning concerts in the hall and showing visitors a fabulous architectural monument.
The case is decisional in nature and is geared towards general management. It asks students to evaluate different options for the future of the institution and to make recommendations to its management team regarding its dilemma: reinforcing the concert hall activities versus developing the monument aspect of the Palau, while taking also into account local versus international developments.
