The Personality Traits and Preferences of Some of Our Favourite Movie Characters: An Application Exercise Drawing upon Jung’s Theory of Psychological Types (Along with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and the Five-Factor Model of Personality: Abstract
The Personality Traits and Preferences of Some of Our Favourite Movie Characters: An Application Exercise Drawing upon Jung’s Theory of Psychological Types (Along with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and the Five-Factor Model of Personality was created by Mélanie Robinson and Marie-Christine Albert.
In the exercise, students are asked to select one of two well-known movie characters: 1. Tony Stark/Iron Man, who has been featured in three Iron Man movies since 2008 as well as six other movies related to either the Avengers or other Marvel comic book characters since then, and 2. Hermione Granger, a central figure in the Harry Potter novels, which have been adapted into seven films since 2001. Students are then tasked with applying either the five-factor model or Jung’s theory of psychological types / MBTI to explain their personality traits or preferences, depending on the model selected.
Teaching objectives
Define the elements associated with one or both of the suggested models/theories of personality (Jung’s theory of psychological types/MBTI and the five-factor model). Apply the selected model to an analysis of the personality of the chosen movie character. Explore the potential influence of personality on our reactions to and relationships with others. Practise conducting complete analyses in line with the course’s evaluation criteria.
