Description

Tony Hall and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden: Abstract

The Royal Opera House is located at the edge of Covent Garden, a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square, past the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. The House, which lines one side of Covent Garden Market, does not give one a true sense of the immense space it occupies. A backstage tour can last over an hour and still afford only a glimpse of all the activities that take place in this maze that covers some two acres and employs over 850 full-time staff, not to mention the numerous invited guests. On almost any night of the season, which runs from September to June, one can see a first-class ballet or opera performance or choose from a varied program of alternative work off the main stage. This case focuses on this royal institution and its current Executive Manager, Tony Hall.
