Description

Entrepreneurship in the Chesapeake Bay Oyster Industry: Abstract

This case is designed to demonstrate issues and problems in sustainability-driven entrepreneurship in the Maryland oyster industry. The once-thriving industry has been decimated in recent years by the degradation of the Chesapeake Bay’s water quality, which has all but destroyed the oyster population.

Students have an opportunity to analyze the scenario of a small business owner on a quest to identify alternatives to his dependence on the natural environment for his survival. The case allows students to review entrepreneurship concepts as well as to understand the integration of environmental management issues into strategic decision making, particularly for small firms. The discussion of the case can also be expanded to include legal and ethical issues resulting from improper management of the natural environment.

Teaching objectives

  • Understand how ideas can lead to performance creation of new ventures
  • Discuss the integration of the natural environmental and entrepreneurial concepts
  • Define the term “sustainability driven entrepreneurship” along with related factors
  • Develop decision-making skills while practicing critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Examine the social and economic implications of environmental policies in business
  • Better understand how social, political, and economic forces impact the natural environment
