Conflict Management: Determining the Source(s) of Incompatibility: Abstract

Francine, a recent university graduate in chemical engineering, has joined the R&D division of a company specializing in plastic products. As a novice technician, she is tasked to work collaboratively with a team of senior technicians under the supervision of Tom, a chemical engineer.

Francine has offered to assist team members on a number of occasions, but they abruptly refused. Aaron, a senior technician, has informed the manager that he and the team do not feel the novice recruit is a good fit for the unit. The manager assures him that he will discuss the issues raised with Francine. At a bilateral meeting, she stresses that the technicians are not comfortable working with a young, educated professional who is trained to be highly results-oriented and efficient. The manager promises to examine the issues and get back to her soon.
